Breed of the Week

Hey everyone! I'm sorry I've been gone, but I was on a trip with some friends and just recently got back. Anyhoo, the breed of the week is.... -drumroll- the Akhal-Teke! Here, you can find the registry: http://www.akhal-tekeregistry.com/.

This breed is endangered. though not critically as of yet. For those of you who follow my blog, you already know this is a Russian breed that can survive days without food or water if necessary! This breed was bred in Asia for about 5,000 years, and has never been plentiful. However, it was a fiercely guarded breed because it was the best of the best warfare "technology" there was. Such a vital weapon could not be given up so easily. The Chinese eagerly sought out these horses on a few violent expeditions, and once they had enough, the Chinese began an extensive breeding program that allowed them to easily defeat the Mongolian warriors on their "inferior" Mongolian horses. In other news, the Mongolian leader, Ghengis Khan, rode an Akhal-Teke, and Bucephalos, Alexander the Great's horse, was also an Akhal-Teke. The Akhal-Teke had such superior breeding throughout the centuries that seemingly every bad horse trait had been bred out of their systems. They are energetic and restless; they seem to be able to go for days without wearing out in the least. They were carefully bred for appearance, efficiency, sensibility, and sensitivity. These horses are said to be able to pick up on mere mental suggestions from humans. Their intelligence is reportedly unmatched with any other breed in the world. Finally, the Akhal-Teke is one of the few breeds in the world that can produce the Metallic coat. A prime, famous example is the palomino pictured above in this post. Though, the one below is also a stunning case of a metallic coat.
